MADWORLD REVIEW

CONSOLE:  Wii

GENRE:  Action, Beat-’em-up

RATING:  M (Mature)

MODES:  Single player, Multiplayer (2 player local)

DEVELOPER:  Platinum Games

STORY:  Madworld is about Jack Cayman, a motorcycling, chainsaw handed, smart mouthed antihero, who is stuck on Jefferson Island.  Jefferson Island was plagued by a virus, which leaves the citizens to die in 24 hours without the antidote.  However, the island has been cut off from the outside world, no one getting in or out.  Jack was inside the city for one purpose:  To participate in a game show taking place in the city.  The game show is called Deathwatch, where participants must kill each other in the most over the top and crazy ways possible.  However, there is much more to the story that I wish not spoil, since there are secrets to the characters, which you can either think of as irrelevant or beneficial to the plot.

GAMEPLAY:  Madworld is a very hilarious beat-em-up.  To start out, you choose a level from the map of Jefferson Island, which will be your fighting ground.  Also, each level has a time limit, all of them, boss battles excluded, being around 30 minutes.  In the level, you basically go in and kill your enemies in the most creative ways possible.  For example, instead of just killing someone by just slamming them into a spike wall, if you slam a tire around them first, it will earn you more points.  However, this does grow to be repetitive, due to the fact you are constantly slamming them with tires, trash cans, shoving poles through their skull cavity, and slamming them repeatedly against a wall of spikes.  However, there are little minigames called Bloodbath Challenges you also do for points.  These consist of Man Darts, Man Golf, Turbinator, Hanabi, and much more.  After earning enough points, you get the chance to take on the boss.  The finishers for each boss can either be taken as either hilarious, brutal, or maybe even a bit of both.

GRAPHICS:  The graphics are perfect for Madworld.  It is shown in a comic book style which only consists of three main colors: Black, white, and red.  This immediately shows how bloody, brutal, and graphic this game is.  However, it is sometimes hard to tell objects or enemies from the environment, since they sometimes do blend in.  Everything is very detailed and the character models are very imaginative.

PRESENTATION:  This game, though good, is very short, possibly taking around 6 hours.  The in-game commentators make the most hilarious comments as you bash a sigh through an enemy’s brain matter, who are voiced by John DiMaggio and Greg Proops.  The games’ bosses are definitely Madworlds’ high point, along with all the ridiculous and hilarious ways you splatter your enemies.  Another thing that should be mentioned is this game requires no waggling or flailing of the Wii Remote.  However, there are some quick time events that do involve motion, such as the boss finishers and slamming a sign through an enemy.  This is easily the most mature and violent for the Wii, so “hardcore gamers” should not skip this one.

PROS:  -Picture perfect graphics.

- There are very many funny and brutal ways you can kill your foes.

- Commentary is hilarious

- Bosses are varied and are unforgettable

- No waggling required

CONS:  -Story is a bit lacking.

- Gameplay gets to be repetitive

- Short, taking about 6 hours.

OVERALL:  9/10

COMMENTS:  If this game were longer and more varied, it would have gotten a ten.  However, I still recommend at least renting this for Wii owners.
